New Publication: Democratic stress, the populist signal and extremist threat

Today sees the publication of a new Policy Network report, sponsored by the Barrow Cadbury Trust, which looks at the rise of populist and extremist movements, examining the disconnect between mainstream political parties and widespread public anxieties.

Based on in-depth cross-European research looking at the policies and campaigning approaches of populist political movements across the continent, the report (authored by Antony Painter) highlights the profound challenges which such groups now represent to established mainstream political parties.

‘Democratic stress, the populist signal and extremist threat’ exposes the failures of those mainstream parties to adequately rise to the challenge of populism, and offers a strategic model for defeating such movements through a combination of ‘statecraft’ and ‘contact democracy’.
