Kanlungan
Established in 1996, Kanlungan is a registered charity consisting of five Filipino community organisations working together on issues relating to their community in Britain.
Kanlungan is a migrant-led, campaigning organisation with a good track record in lobbying the Government - its previous efforts have led to the Home Office agreeing to concessions with regard to the treatment of migrant care workers.
Kanlungan estimates that approximately 3,500 senior care workers are at risk of losing their visas due to repeated changes in immigration legislation. To exacerbate matters, the only possibility for individuals to appeal is through the courts, at great expense, with the average care worker unable to afford to appeal. In order to address this, Kanlungan are seeking a judicial review challenging the implementation of changes to immigration rules which has led to the unjust and discriminatory treatment of senior care workers by the UK Border Agency. The Barrow Cadbury Fund is contributing to this campaign.
Kanlungan is a brilliant example of a group enabling the voices of migrants to participate in the migration debate. They provide inspiration to those seeking to challenge the unfair treatment of other groups of vulnerable migrants and have achieved great success through working in partnership.
